This is a depiction of the mighty Indian king, King Phillip, during King Phillip's War (1675-1676). The Puritans believed King Phillip, son of former peacekeeper Massasoit, retaliated against the Puritans because he wasn't aware of the peaceful relations his father and the Puritans had. This lead to, in the opinion of the Puritans, his inability to compromise and a nasty war that ended with King Phillip's head being placed on a stake in Boston.
