Here, African slaves are farming and planting for their masters in Virginia. Due to the territory, most likely they are cropping tobacco, the region's main export at the time. Slaves would work tirelessly without pay for their entire lives.

This is a photo of a what it looks like inside a ship carrying slaves on the "Middle Passage" from Western Africa to the New World. The conditions on these ships were poor, leaving nearly 20% of each load of Africans dead. Also, you can see the slave trader carrying the lantern in the back as he monitors his products for sale. These slave traders looked at these people as objects not human beings.
